Ziskakan

Reunion Island
Maloya / Traditional

Gilbert Pounia is a symbol of the Island of Reunion. This singer-songwriter who is more a "storyteller-singer" is the charismatic leader of the band Ziskakan which he founded in 1979 and which enjoys worldwide recognition (United States, Canada, Europe). His style is a reflection of Reunion (akin to the Blues but with the Creole influences of the Islands), mixed with Madagascar and Indian music, African Drums and Creole lyrics. Humanist poet and man of convictions, Gilbert Pounia succeeded admirably in propagating and preserving the musical culture of the Reunion Islands and keeping alive the once banned "Maloya" - a musical style with roots in slavery and oppression.
